Structural Engineer/Geotechnical Earthquake Engineer

  2025-07-01     Aalo Atomics     Idaho Falls,ID
Description:

About Aalo Atomics

Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we're rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world's first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the role

We are seeking an exceptional Structural Engineer/Geotechnical Earthquake Engineer with expertise spanning structural and geotechnical domains. This role requires understanding of complex structural/seismic interactions between systems, structures and components, and the ability to push beyond common engineering approaches. Even if you don't cover all the requirements below, but you believe that you have an in-depth understanding of numerical modeling, frequency-domain analysis, time-domain analysis, implicit and explicit solvers, please consider applying to this position.

What you'll do

  • Dynamic analyses that include soil dynamic behavior, linear elastic to equivalent-linear to nonlinear constitutive models for pressure-dependent materials, modal analyses, and structural components.
  • Develop numerical models that capture:
    • Complex soil-structure interaction effects, boundary conditions, and contacts.
    • Kinematic and internal mechanisms
    • Wave propagation through layered domains and structural systems
  • Evaluate civil-structural systems against natural phenomena hazards (seismic, wind, tornado, ...), considering uncertainties in material properties.
  • Evaluate/review site-specific hazard analyses including:
    • Design ground motions and response spectra
    • Ground motion selection and matching
    • Vertical and horizontal spatial variability effects
  • Integrate geotechnical considerations with structural response for bridging between soil mechanics and structural dynamics to develop holistic solutions.
Qualifications

Required:

  • MS required, PhD preferred in Civil/Geotechnical/Structural Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in numerical modeling, finite element modeling, and dynamic analysis
  • Demonstrated expertise through prior experience and/or publications
  • Strong writing and communication skills
Preferred:
  • In-depth understanding of
o Soil dynamics and constitutive modeling of pressure-dependent material behavior

o History analysis

o Performance-based design and risk-targeted approaches

o Structural failure modes

o Nonlinear structural analyses and damage modeling

o Finite element modeling and numerical analysis
  • Experience with nuclear facilities or other safety-critical infrastructure
  • Familiarity with nuclear energy regulatory environment
  • Understanding of radiation and thermal effects on materials and long-term degradation mechanisms
  • Knowledge of probabilistic risk assessment methodologies
