Overview

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for a GIS Technician. This position performs a variety of working level professional and technical duties related to the maintenance of the Geographic Information System (GIS) including datasets and maps. Starting hourly wage depending on experience - $23.00 - $25.00 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Perform regular and routine edits in order to maintain various GIS datasets used throughout the city, including addresses, base data, fiber, parcels, power, sanitation, sewer, storm, streets, traffic, water, and other related information.
  • Perform regular and routine quality assurance/quality control on various datasets in order to ensure accuracy and completeness of the information.
  • Utilize principles of cartography and knowledge of GIS software concepts and capabilities to effectively and quickly prepare maps, applications, and other related information for various city departments, divisions, employees, and the general public.
Education and Experience
  1. A. Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Information Systems, Computer Information Technology, Engineering, or closely related field. AND
  2. B. One (1) to Two (2) years of experience in GIS or closely related field.
  3. C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledgeof Geographic Information Systems (GIS) operations and maintenance; Esri software, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Portal for ArcGIS and other related software; Microsoft Office products; computer software, hardware, and networks; civil engineering terminology and practices; working knowledge of Python, SQL, Arcade, Java Script, HTML or related computer languages.

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with professionals, sub-professionals, supervisors, fellow employees, and the public; ability to read, interpret and produce maps and charts with GIS software; ability to read and plot legal descriptions; ability to work in a position which requires continuous sitting or standing and concentrated mental applications.

Special Qualifications

Must possess a valid Idaho drivers license.

Working Conditions

Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Essential functions require talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in normal course of job performance.
