Starting Salary: Pay Grade 10 - starting salary $18.59 per hour

Work Hours: 40 hours a week

General Purpose

Serve as the first point of contact for customers depositing waste at the waste facility; Responsible for the scaling of all vehicles that enter the Bonneville County solid waste facilities while providing efficient, courteous customer service.

Supervision Received

Work under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor or Administrative Assistant as directed.

Essential Functions

Operate landfill scale, computer, cash register and other related office equipment to enter and maintain data for various statistical reports. Answer customer questions related to policies and regulations of the Solid Waste Department. Maintain detailed computer records of volume and type of waste entering the landfill through the transfer station; check contractors and the public before admittance for compliance with regulations.

Direct traffic at the solid waste transfer facility receiving area; monitor waste for listed or characteristic hazardous or unacceptable materials; provide for proper disposal. Determine appropriate fees for solid waste disposal in accordance with rate schedule, collect fees and direct customers to appropriate area of disposal site.

Provide information to the public concerning disposal and recycling of solid waste and apprise public of regulations and guidelines governing proper methods for disposing of various types of hazardous materials.

Provide accurate and efficient information for customer billing to include reports to customers and management.

Assist with clerical duties; answer phones; maintain filing system for various documents;

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Educations and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school or equivalent;

AND

B. One (1) year related experience in customer service;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the equipment associated with solid waste facilities. Knowledge of basic record keeping principles and procedures.

Ability to read, interpret and apply moderately complex written and oral instructions related to identification and handling of hazardous and unacceptable materials; perform daily work involving written or numerical data and to make arithmetic calculations accurately, maintain simple clerical records, receive cash funds and make change accurately, communicate and interface with the public, and establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public.

3. Special Qualifications:

  • Must complete Hazardous Waste Recognition Training Course annually.
  • Must complete CPR training every 2 years.
  • Must be willing to work shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol testing and pre-employment background check

4. Work Environment:

Tasks performed in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Occasional discomfort related to equipment fumes and related circumstances associated with equipment maintenance center. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular exertion, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to job tasks. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and critical thinking. Normal setting for this job is: Scale House. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

While heavy lifting is not typically involved, employees may need to occasionally lift or move light items like boxes or files.
